In 1991, four Marion County high school senior basketball players were selected to participate in a college workout for a group of junior college coaches. Impressed by the young men’s skills, each was offered an athletic scholarship with an opportunity to further their education; an opportunity they would not have had otherwise. This initial experience spawned the inspiration and vision for what has become the annual Super Shootout City-County All-Star Game and SSI College Workouts.
Originally known as the City-County Shootout, the first boys’ All-Star game was held in the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in 1992. The following year, the organization added the girls’ City-County game. That same year, The Indianapolis Recorder stepped forward to become the first presenting sponsor of the All-Star Game. Since those first games, the organization has paired with many notable brands and local community leaders, such as former Indiana Pacer and NBA All-Star Jermaine O’Neal and former 2007 Indiana Mr. Basketball, and Gold Medal winner Eric Gordon to broaden the impact on the Indianapolis community.
Today, more than 900 student-athletes have participated in the All-Star game and SSI College Workouts since their inception. Our work has amounted to over 100 athletic scholarships being awarded to Marion County student-athletes. Our partnerships with local business and community leaders, as well as influential brands have created opportunity and impact on our local communities, inspiring tomorrow’s leaders.
In the future, SSI will continue to use the passion of Indiana – basketball – as a means of raising funds and developing programming that will foster continuing education and a desire to give back to their communities. In additional to our long history of rewarding bright young leaders with critical scholarships so that they might continue their education, we are creating educational programming and providing resources so that our bright young leaders of tomorrow will have access to tools and community leaders that can provide them with the life-skills and inspiration to make a difference.
